Organising yourself

Before starting your own business, you should take a look at yourself and decide whether you have the appropriate qualities to succeed.

There is no definitive skill set for the businessman but certain traits form a common thread in successful individuals:

Self Analysis

Each individual has a unique set of experiences from both education and a working standpoint. Each individual also has a perception of personal strengths and weaknesses.

  • Ask a close friend and/or work colleague to list what they see as your strengths and weaknesses.

  • List your interests and also things that don't particularly interest you in a business context.

Gap Analysis

Having set out what you are good at and interested in, look at what your business needs to succeed. Vision, focus, leadership, hard work, ideas, task finisher, administrator together with the relevant expertise all need to appear in the skill set for the business. Recognition that certain skills are missing in your business is the first step to filling in those gaps.

The options are to train yourself and your current team. Buy in a consultant as a one off or recruit a more permanent member of your team.

Time Management

Time management is a planning tool that, if used, will ensure that your personal and business goals are identified, prioritised, and action plans implemented to achieve them. Each of your goals are broken down into smaller tasks and sub-tasks (if appropriate).

  • Look at which of these tasks are time-critical and dependent upon a prior task being completed.

  • Plot each of these tasks onto a planner or diary as the key task to be performed on that day.

  • Allow time for administrative tasks such as telephone calls interruptions and break times.

The benefit of making a list and a time deadline is that it provides you with a focal point, and there is also a sense of achievement when the task is completed.
