What is a business incubator?

A business incubator is an organisation that supports the entrepreneurial process, helping to increase survival rates for innovative startup companies. Entrepreneurs with feasible projects are admitted into incubators, where they are offered a specialised menu of support resources and services.

The resources and services open to an entrepreneur include: provision of physical space, mentoring, help in making an effective business plan, administrative services, technical support, business networking, advice on intellectual property and sources of financing. The incubation process is intended to last around 2-5 years.

Why should a new business want to locate in a business incubator?

NBIA estimates that approximately 80 percent of incubated firms survive their first three years, compared with a 35 to 40 percent survival rate for non-incubated startups. Business failures waste important capital, whereas success stimulates future investment potential within a community. In a recent study conducted by NBIA, some 66 percent of 126 incubated companies reported that incubator services were important to their survival and success.
