EMIN News - Cascade's new hard cell

Case study: Cascade Biologics

Staff at Cascade Biologics are celebrating their first highly successful year based at the Mansfield i-centre with the launch of exciting and dynamic plans for the expansion of the company's business.

Cascade produces and supplies human cells, primarily from skin and blood vessels, for use in medical research. The company also develops the culture media, growth supplements and other reagents to keep the cell cultures growing in the laboratory, under controlled conditions, for several weeks.

Cascade's work is crucial in helping researchers meet ethical standards and ever-tighter European legislation by offering an effective alternative to animal testing in pioneering research. The aim is to help scientists develop valuable models of human disease, as well as aiding new drug development and providing rapid, sensitive tests for chemical toxicity.

Dr Carol Barker, Manager of European Operations, is delighted with progress during the first year. She said: "The location of our new European hub at the Mansfield i-centre has enabled the team to rapidly develop markets across the continent. It has been extremely rewarding to work alongside European scientists from diverse backgrounds, and to provide the tools they need to conduct critical research.

We've had a very positive response from the UK and European scientific communities, and enjoyed close collaboration with local universities. We fully intend to build on these relationships."

She continued: "The i-centre provides excellent business and administrative support, impressive conference facilities and a unique cutting edge learning and research environment."

Other plans for Cascade's second year at the i-centre include a cell culture laboratory, which will contribute considerably to the company's drive to increase its market share and create more jobs locally. It is also looking to host conferences for scientists from across the UK.
