Case study: OBBeC Media

There is currently a revolution taking place in modern biosciences, caused by a new wave of computing and specialist technologies. This is the field of bioinformatics and a specialist media publishing company, formed by two graduates of De Montfort University, has its finger well and truly on the pulse.
Tim El-Sheikh and Teacha Hamilton only founded OBBeC Media in late 2004, yet already it produces publications, an international magazine and a web portal that are acknowledged as global authorities on the Bioinformatics sector.
Both Tim and Teacha had worked in the biomedical and pharmaceutical sciences industry before going on to complete their Master degrees in Information Technology and Computing Sciences. The pair then spotted a need for more media coverage of the emerging $36 billion global bioinformatics industry.
Having established a web portal called Orbital Biocomputing and Bioinformatics eCentre (OBBeC),the pair then moved into the De Montfort University Innovation Centre, gaining support from EMIN as a young, innovative company with the potential for high growth on a global scale.
The company is going from strength to strength, appointing a sales and marketing director and technical contractor in autumn
2005, with plans to introduce a graphics editor and further strengthen the sales and marketing team in 2006.
